'Rebuild' - Many Saints fans react to decision on 'scapegoated' 24 y/o overlooked by Hasenhuttl
A number of Southampton fans have suggested that Angus Gunn needs to take his chance to rediscover his form in the Championship following his loan move to Stoke City.
Gunn made the late departure to Stoke on transfer deadline day, arriving at the bet365 Stadium on a season-long loan deal with the 24-year-old replacing Jack Butland, who headed to Crystal Palace. It had been suggested that the move for the Saints ‘keeper could have been with an option to buy, although that is not now thought to be the case, as per The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon.
Ralph Hasenhuttl had been keen to allow Gunn to get some regular game-time elsewhere after he fell down the pecking order behind both Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster. Gunn started last season as the Saint’s number one but, after conceding 2.5 goals per game last term, he was taken out of the spotlight, via Sofascore.
The 24-year-old’s confidence was massively affected by him starting the infamous 9-0 humbling against Leicester City last season. In truth, there was little any ‘keeper could have done that night, such was the shambolic nature of Southampton’s defending.
Some Southampton fans were keen to point out that Gunn had been unfairly “scapegoated” for that defeat, while others were keen to point out that he is still a ‘keeper with a lot of quality and potential who now needs to take his chance to impress on loan with Stoke.

Good business all round there. I know we’re all bored of “that” defeat but it really did hit him hard. A good young GK, with good pedigree, hopefully build up his confidence as the potential is very much there.

Good luck to him. Fully believe he will show himself to be a top keeper. Unjustifiably scapegoated from the Leicester result.

Good luck to Angus Gunn at Stoke! I’m pleased it’s without an option to buy coz he is fine pro – no moaning etc, young & gives us options when he returns! #SaintsFC

Happy we didn't give Stoke an option to buy Gunn. If he does well we could have him back. #SaintsFC
