‘Would be a good test’ – Pundit urges Jurgen Klopp to play ‘world-class’ talent against West Ham

Former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown believes that playing youngster Rhys Williams against West Ham United this weekend would be a “good test” for him.

Williams becoming talk of the town

The 19-year-old has suddenly become relied upon by manager Jurgen Klopp following his recent defensive crisis.

Ballon d’Or runner up Virgil van Dijk ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton and Joel Matip has been struggling for fitness for some time. To top off his woes, Fabinho limped off injured against FC Midtjylland, with Williams being the man to replace him on the night.

The Englishman played 60 minutes in what was his fourth outing for the first-team and put in an impressive performance alongside Joe Gomez at the back to keep a clean sheet.

His teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold told LFCTV that he was “doing a world-class job” and has a “bright future ahead” after the game.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown was keen to see Williams thrown into the mix as he continues to gain first-team experience.

“You need these opportunities so players can adapt,” he said. “You watch players in the lower leagues who go on loan and people say: ‘Oh, he’s not very good,’ but it’s a different game, a different setup. All of sudden the players get the experience and are then ready to step in.

“Whether he’s used in the Premier League, we’ll see at Anfield on Saturday. You would say that would be a good test for him.

“No disrespect but against West Ham you’d expect them to do very well even though it’s an improved West Ham side, don’t get me wrong.

“That could be a game that possibly Jurgen thinks he should have a go at that.”

Following in the footsteps

Williams is embarking on a familiar journey to the one that Alexander-Arnold did in 2017, which eventually saw him cement his place in the team and into Anfield folklore itself.

Now at the age of 22, he replaced the injured Nathaniel Clyne and really impressed Jurgen Klopp to the extent that Clyne has now left Anfield.

Williams could follow this exact path and have similar successes to those Alexander-Arnold has had so far, but the hard work starts now for the youngster.

Time will tell how Williams will progress his career, and whether he can live up to the high expectations of the Kop faithful in the coming months.
