SportsReport: Chelsea given green light to land £89m-rated summer target – on one condition
Chelsea are drawing ever nearer to their top transfer target as Bayer Leverkusen give the green light to the departure of Kai Havertz.
According to Bild (via Daily Star), the Bundesliga outfit have accepted that the midfielder wants to leave this summer and will allow him to join Chelsea.
The German club has also given the Blues an extra boost, allowing them to pay the mammoth £89.8m price tag in instalments. However, Havertz must stay until August and see out Leverkusen’s Europa League campaign before he can make his departure.
A number of Premier League sides have shown interest in the German playmaker but Chelsea have been tipped as favourites to get the deal over the line (via Sky Sports).
Along with new arrivals Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Havertz looks set to become part of a side under a very exciting transition.
Leverkusen are set to host Rangers in the long-awaited second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie. Havertz scored a penalty in the reverse fixture to open the scoring in a 3-1 victory at Ibrox (via BBC Sport). Another win, or even a draw, will see the German club progress into the quarter-finals.
Who knows, Havertz could yet make the move to Stamford Bridge with a Europa League winner’s medal in his pocket if Leverkusen emulate Chelsea’s feat in Baku from last year.
