Report: £300m Newcastle takeover bid under threat as fresh news emerges
The proposed £300 million takeover of Newcastle United has been put under threat as news emerged from Bloomberg that Henry Mauriss is planning a charm offensive in the United Kingdom to try and push through his own bid of taking over in the North East.
As per the outlet, the American businessman is looking to hire a public relations adviser to help sell his proposal as he looks to raise his profile to officials from the Premier League and fans of the Tyneside club.
Mauriss has apparently already met with Mike Ashley to discuss his offer, which is said to be around £350 million, £50 million more than what Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-led group have agreed with the chief executive of Sports Direct.
With the uncertainty over whether the top flight will approve of the deal between Ashley and the Saudi consortium, added to the fact that Mauriss has made a higher offer, this may potentially put the original bid under threat as the end of the 2019/20 season approaches.
Also among the original buying side alongside Staveley is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) and his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), as well as the billionaire Reuben brothers, who are originally from India but are now based in London.
Whether the bid from Mauriss is seriously considered in the whole saga is another question, but it does arguably add to the uncertainty surrounding the approval of the original £300 million deal.
Nevertheless, the final decision still lies within the hands of England’s highest division.
