Sunderland have joined Scottish Premiership duo Aberdeen and Hibernian in the transfer race for MK Dons midfielder Conor McGrandles.
A points-per-game system ended the League One season and ended any hopes that the Black Cats had of gaining promotion to the Championship this year. Finishing eighth in the league standings has now put heavy pressure on boss Phil Parkinson to build a squad this summer capable of gaining promotion next term.
A number of first team regulars are expected to leave the club when their current contracts expire, meaning some new players will need to be signed.
Football Insider claim that the Wearside club are now looking at bringing in MK Dons midfielder McGrandles, although they added that both Aberdeen and Hibernian are also interested in the 24-year-old.
Appearing 31 times for the League One side, McGrandles gained one goal and two assists this season, seeing him participate in 8% of Russell Martin’s side’s 36 league goals.
With a year left on his deal with the Dons, a summer move is being discussed with financial pressure firmly on English Football League clubs due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Every transfer decision needs to be madewith extreme caution and precision this summer at Sunderland. If things are not done right and results are slow in coming next season, fans of the club could quickly lose patience.
Signing a proven League One player like McGrandles, and seeing off Scottish top-flight competition for him, could help to appease some unrest on Wearsider.
