Sports“Leeds need another Kalvin Phillips” - Bielsa tipped to make a key January signing
Leeds have been without key midfielder Kalvin Phillips for their last three Premier League games. They have lost two and won one of these matches and former striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that the midfielder’s absence has impacted the side massively, so much so that he thinks Leeds need to bring in some depth in that position.
What Agbonlahor had to say about the Leeds midfielder
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor said: “He’s been a huge miss. You look at certain games and he’s the one that would have broken up certain attacks. He’s not there and they’ve suffered from that.
“But you can’t rely on one player because you’re going to get a lot of players injured every season in every team especially as the games are so congested now. So maybe Leeds need another Kalvin Phillips to fill in for him when he’s not available.
“I feel they might bring in somebody else in January just to be there if he does get injured.”
Has his absence affected the squad massively?
The English midfielder has had an impressive start to life in the Premier League. The 24 year-old has been a menace for opposition attacks as he managed on average 3.4 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.2 clearances (WhoScored) per game before injury.
The three games that Bielsa has been without the midfielder in the Premier League have seen the Whites concede eight goals. Meanwhile when he featured, the club only conceded six goals in five matches (Transfermarkt).
Phillips is highly rated, with Neil Redfearn saying: ‘He is the perfect build for that position, a powerful player but also has a fantastic range of passing.’
The stats suggest that the club are missing an enforcer-type player in the middle of the pitch due to Phillips’ absence and signing a player to increase depth in this position would be a great idea.
