‘He’s not at the right level’ – Liverpool tipped to avoid 2016 repeat after transfer reveal

Former Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent believes that Liverpool will avoid a repeat of the past after a report involving Daryl Janmaat emerged.

Janmaat a no-go

TEAMTalk revealed earlier last week that the Dutchman is being considered by the Anfield club as short-term cover, on the back of the Reds’ devastating defensive injury crisis.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out with long-term knee injuries, leaving just Joel Matip as the club’s only established centre-back available for selection at this time.

Having previously signed Steven Caulker in a similar situation back in 2016, Bent told Football Insider that Liverpool are operating under dramatically different circumstances and as such, he does not believe the Reds will follow a similar path.

“For me, he’s not at the right level,” he said, “but at the same time sometimes when you’re desperate, we’ve seen Liverpool before make crazy moves like when they signed Steven Caulker. They were struggling for defenders and they signed him and put him up front!

“It all comes down to how desperate they actually are. Right now, they seem to be pretty desperate because they’re running out of defenders.

“You have to think to yourself for a club like Liverpool they don’t really have to be that desperate.

“They’re the Premier League champions, they won the Champions League a couple of years of back.

Bent continued. “They have not really got anything to worry about as much because everybody would love to go there and play. Everybody wants to go and play for Jurgen Klopp, everybody wants to go play with Salah, Mane, Van Dijk and these characters.

“They don’t have a problem attracting these players. They won’t have to scrape the barrel just to find anything that works.”

Transfer Tavern take

It is difficult to argue with what Bent is saying. It is unlikely after everything his side have achieved in the past two seasons, that Klopp will succumb to temptations to sign a cheaper option on the back of tighter financial restrictions.

As we’ve seen in recent years, the German tactician has plenty of faith in his young players, with Trent Alexander-Arnold who has gone on to blossom in the first team, the perfect example of that.

It could be time for Rhys Williams to take a similar path, or Klopp may need to spend big in January to bring in someone of experience and presence.

In other news, Liverpool could go in for ‘extraordinary’ defender that Diego Maradona loves.
