'Shaky' - Newcastle marksman takes confident swipe at 'nervous' Man Utd ahead of St James' clash

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has suggested he is confident the Magpies can take advantage over Manchester United’s poor start to the campaign when the teams meet at St James’ Park tonight.

The Magpies come into the contest on a high after securing a 3-1 win against Burnley in their last match before the international break. That form is in stark contract to their opponents, who have already suffered two defeats in their opening three Premier League matches.

Callum Wilson ready to cash in on Man United’s porous backline

Wilson has enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign, with the striker having taken his tally to four goals in four league games with a brace against Burnley last time out. The 28-year-old is in confident mood following his £20m summer arrival from Bournemouth, averaging 2.3 shots per game and a goal every 89 minutes (via Sofascore).

Manchester Unite have been struggling defensively since the start of the campaign, with the Red Devils shipping 11 goals in just three matches. Their current vulnerabilities were exposed by Tottenham last time out, who hit them for six in a humiliating defeat.

Speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of Newcastle’s meeting with Manchester United, Wilson outlined that he is feeling confident he can continue his fine recent form against the Red Devils’ struggling defence.

He said: “I see they have conceded 11 goals in three games, so you take confidence from that.

“It could be a case that when they got back together, they were a little bit shaky and a little bit nervous after their last performance.

“I’ve been around working with the squad and there were a lot here who are probably going to play.”

Newcastle confidence emphasises Manchester United issues

Normally you might expect it to be Newcastle defenders approaching a game against Manchester United with trepidation, but for Wilson to publicly state that he is eager to fill his boots against the Red Devils hints at their opponents’ current frailties. The 28-year-old is not in the sort of form where he will turn down any gifts afforded to him by sloppy defending and the Red Devils could be in danger of doing that.

The Magpies surprisingly beat Manchester United 1-0 at St James’ Park last term, but this time around you get the sense another win would be less of a shock. Newcastle must latch onto any mistakes made by United’s defenders and make sure they put them under pressure throughout.
