Rangers receive huge Europa League boost as influential Gala duo set to miss out

Glasgow Rangers have been handed a boost ahead of their Europa League play-off clash against Galatasaray as it has been revealed that Arda Turan and Falcao are unlikely to be included in the starting XI for the Turkish side.

The Gers are one win away from the group stages, having beaten Lincoln Red Imps and Willem II 5-0 and 4-0 respectively to make this stage of the competition, but this latest test is likely to be far more of a testing proposition. Gala are one of Turkey’s biggest names, after all – they are the most successful Turkish side in the Super Lig, having won the title 22 times, and they were in the Champions League just last season.

However, it seems that they could be without two of their most influential players at Ibrox. Turan recently showed coronavirus symptoms and, despite eventually testing negative, he has been left out of the squad that travelled to Scotland, whilst Radamel Falcao is likely to start on the bench according to The Scottish Sun as Fatih Terim prioritises the league over European competition.

This is no doubt a boost for Steven Gerrard and his players. Whilst Falcao may be 34, he is still deadly in front of goal, having scored 14 games in 25 matches since making the move to Istanbul. Turan may not be the same player he once was – he made just nine appearances for Istanbul Basaksehir last season in the league – but his pedigree and influence in an important knockout match speaks for itself, with him having appeared in two Champions League finals.

Having said that, there is still plenty of quality in this Galatasaray side to cause the 54-time Scottish champions problems. Emre Kilinc’s 24 goals and 29 assists in 119 games for Sivasspor from the wings before joining Gala show he can be an attacking threat, whilst Sofiane Feghouli and Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate Ryan Babel are also available to Terim. Falcao and Turan may take a bit of an edge off their opponents, but the Gers must not take their opponents lightly as a result.
