'Priority has to be here' - Gerrard urges caution over 'frightening' Gers star

Steven Gerrard has poured cold water on talk of Glasgow Rangers’ Ryan Kent being called up to the England squad any time soon.

Kent not ready for England

23-year-old Kent has been in fantastic form for the Gers so far this campaign – he already has five goals and five assists in his first 14 matches. Teammate Scott Arfield has even called him “frightening” already this season. As such, there have been suggestions that he could be called up by Gareth Southgate to play for the Three Lions.

That has not yet happened, and Gerrard was speaking about that possibility prior to the Ibrox outfit’s Europa League clash against Lech Poznan. He said:

“I don’t know what Gareth is looking for.

“But I know he has a luxury of wide men available. He’s got wide men who are producing the goods consistently in the English Premier League and Bundesliga.

“If you look at the England team and squad at the moment, you would actually say that is the strongest position.

“So it’s certainly a big challenge, not just for Ryan but for any young English winger who has ambitions of representing England.

“You are talking about players worth over £100 million in there, so it’s certainly a huge challenge.

“But that’s not important to me at the moment – I don’t know how important it is to Ryan. The priority has to be here at Rangers.

“This should be the bread and butter of his focus and he has started the season in a fantastic place. His form has been really, really good.”

Would need to leave Ibrox

England are currently one of the best international teams in the world. They are 4th in the FIFA rankings, and have made the semi-finals in the last two tournaments, the World Cup and the UEFA Nations League. In the attacking areas, the competition for places is huge – Kent would be competing with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford for a place in the starting line-up.

The other issue is where Kent is playing his football. It is very rare for anyone playing in Scotland to be called up to the England squad – Fraser Forster was the last to be capped for the 1966 world champions whilst featuring north of the border. As such, Kent would likely need to leave if he were to receive this ultimate recognition. For now, though, he should concentrate on the job at hand with the Gers.

In other news, Rangers fans are annoyed at this new signing’s latest comments.
