'A few eyebrows were raised' - Pundit questions expensive Everton transfer decision

Kevin Phillips has questioned the signing of Alex Iwobi by Everton as the former Arsenal man failed to impress against Southampton last Sunday.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland striker was very critical of the Nigeria international off the back of a rather poor display against the Saints over the weekend, saying:

“It has not happened for him at Everton.

“I have to say that a few eyebrows were raised when he did sign for Everton. Certainly from people that I know that support Arsenal, they were surprised by the amount of money Everton signed him for.

“It has not worked out for him and I still do not know what his best position is. He is one of those players where he will probably retire and you look back and ask, ‘What was his best position?’

“To try and replace Richarlison, who has been outstanding this season, is always going to be difficult. He had his opportunity at Southampton and the fact that he was brought off at half time suggests that he failed to do that.

“He could quite easily find himself sitting on the bench for the majority of this season.”

Iwobi was poor against Southampton

Indeed, Iwobi was arguably pretty poor against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team in the Toffees’ 2-0 defeat, so much so that he was taken off at half-time. The 24-year old failed to register a single shot on target, key pass or successful cross in the first half of the game (Sofascore).

If he continues to put in such poor displays, then he may not start many more matches under Carlo Ancelotti, as Phillips suggests.

Everton paid Arsenal too much for Iwobi

Indeed, it seems as if the Merseyside club simply paid way too much money for Iwobi in hindsight. Costing the Toffees a sizeable £27.36m to lure him from the Emirates Stadium in the summer 2019 transfer window, the winger has certainly not lived up to his price tag so far.

Iwobi has only managed to score three goals and provide three assists in 36 games in all competitions for the Blues so far (Transfermarkt). For an attacking player who cost no far off £30m, he arguably needs to be scoring and assisting more in order to justify his transfer fee.
