Newcastle ace reveals which summer signing is 'bringing out the best in me'

Newcastle United forward Joelinton has suggested that the Magpies’ decision to bring in Callum Wilson this summer is having a real positive effect on his form so far this term.

Wilson arrived at St James’ Park in the summer in a £20 million deal and he has already hit the ground running, firing in four goals in his opening four Premier League matches. Steve Bruce had been searching for a reliable striker who could take on the pressure of being the Magpies’ main goal scorer.

Wilson helping Joelinton flourish

Joelinton went into the season under pressure to show his worth, after what was a very poor debut campaign in English football last season. The Brazilian was brought into Newcastle with a lot of expectation after the Magpies made him their club-record signing. However, Bruce failed to get anything like the best out of him.

The forward was often isolated up front and given little help in and around the opposition’s box. However, he still could have scored far more than the two goals he managed, as he missed eight big chances. The 24-year-old averaged just 36.5 touches a game, which shows just how detached he was from the rest of the side, via Sofascore.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Joelinton suggested that Newcastle’s decision to sign Wilson has made a huge impact on his form. While he also outlined how he is ambitious to build a partnership with the 28-year-old and improve his end product in the final third.

He said: “It felt good, having two attacking players around me, I hope that continues. I hope I score a lot more goals.

“Callum Wilson coming in [from Bournemouth] is very welcome. He can play as the front striker and I like to drop into space behind. I want to score more goals, but I am looking forward to good, positive things ahead. I think it is bringing out the best in me.”

Sings of a potential growing partnership

Whilst at Hoffenheim Joelinton demonstrated his ability to drop into deeper attacking positions and link the play with other forwards. There have been signs so far that he can now start to do that with Wilson in the side leading the line. Against Burnley, the forward averaged a passing accuracy of 84% and also provided one key pass, showing his ability to link the play (via Sofascore).

That is the kind of service that Wilson could potentially thrive off, with the forward possessing that natural goal-scoring instinct. Alan Shearer described the 28-year-old as being ‘horrible to play against’ due to his pressing and runs in behind, and it is those qualities along with his goalscoring threat that are bringing the best out of himself and Joelinton.

Newcastle fans, can Joelinton and Wilson become one of the league’s best-attacking partnerships? Let us know your thoughts below!
