'I've made it pretty clear' - Gerrard reveals Gers transfer situation ahead of Europa League tie

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Glasgow Rangers’ ability to bring in new players depends on if they beat Galatasaray and make the Europa League group stages.

The Gers have been busy during this transfer window already, bringing in Ianis Hagi, Calvin Bassey, Jon McLaughlin, Leon Balogun, Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe. However, Gerrard has already revealed that he is looking to bring in another midfielder before the deadline, whilst the Ibrox outfit have been linked to the likes of Daniel Johnson and Bongani Zungu.

Speaking ahead of the clash against the Turkish side, Gerrard admitted that their transfer situation is linked to whether they can progress in European competition. He explained:

“I do think that depending on whether we qualify or not would depend on what we try and do.

“I’ve made it pretty clear what I feel we need, but I also respect the club’s position in the current climate.

“I think that’s a question for people who are above me at the club. I can’t really answer that right now.”

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge effect on football, and in Scotland in particular. The previous campaign was cut short, whilst Hearts benefactor James Anderson donated more than £3m to the men’s game north of the border in a bid to ease the financial difficulties.

European football, even if it is the Europa League rather than the Champions League, is a gold-mine for the likes of the Gers. The 54-time Scottish champions reached the round of 16 in last year’s edition of this very tournament, picking up £7.25m just in prize money – that is without counting gate receipts and TV cash.

Making the group stages would guarantee the Gers at least €2.92m (£2.67m), which could well be put towards new signings. It is also important to consider that new players may not be needed if the demands of a European run are no longer a problem. One thing is clear – the Gers’ situation will be a lot clearer come Friday morning.
