‘Could be for Spurs’ - Pundit tips Jose Mourinho to sign ‘fantastic’ 31-cap colossus

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has claimed that Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger would be a ‘fantastic’ addition for Spurs after they potentially confirm a deal for Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius – going on to hint he ‘could be’ the club’s ideal seventh signing.

Rudiger, who has been left out of Chelsea’s last four match day squads, now looking surplus-to-requirement under Frank Lampard, is currently attracting interest from Spurs as a ‘plan B‘ option to prime defensive target Milan Skriniar.

The 6ft 3 ace, who has amassed 31 international caps for Germany over his career, is currently valued at around £22.7 million according to reports, but recent updates hint that the west Londoners could be willing to let him leave on loan for the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign.

Spurs have been pretty active in the transfer market this window, securing deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and soon-to-be sixth signing Vinicius.

Now that Tottenham’s hunt for a new striker could be resolved, attention turns to a defensive ace who can help to shore up Jose Mourinho’s back four, and Rudiger could be a stellar option if a Skriniar deal fails to be agreed.

The £100,000-per-week colossus has proven experience in England’s top flight and could suit the Portuguese’ system – with pundit McAvennie now stating he ‘could be for Spurs’ after failing to adapt at Chelsea under Lampard.

“He is German and the German defenders are not bat at all,” he told Football Insider.

“I think it is the system that Frank plays perhaps did not suit him but he has been caught out a bit at Chelsea. But the boy is a fantastic defender and could be for Spurs.

“Mourinho is building a great squad there. I think they will be there or thereabouts and possibly challenging the top teams when Gareth Bale comes back from injury. The chances he will create for Harry Kane will be exceptional.”

Whether or not Spurs make Rudiger their seventh summer signing remains to be seen, but he could be a viable asset.
