'It was a very low amount' - 36-goal Gers cult hero admits confusion over £5m Ibrox exit

Nikica Jelavic has admitted that he was surprised by the low fee Glasgow Rangers accepted to sell him in 2012.

Jelavic confused

Jelavic made the move to Ibrox for £4m in the summer of 2010, and went on to become a cult hero. In 56 games in all competitions for the Gers, he scored 36 goals, and was part of the last squad on the blue side of Glasgow to win a major trophy.

Just 18 months later, though, he was sold to Everton for £5m, which represented a profit of just £1m. Speaking to The Athletic, Jelavic has revealed his confusion surrounding his departure. He said:

“They just told me they accepted the offer from Everton. I don’t even remember who it was. To be honest I was surprised, as I thought they would at least get a few million more. I always wanted to play in the Premier League so it was a good opportunity for me and I don’t regret it, but it was a very low amount for the club so I don’t know why they accepted that amount.”

Beginning of the end

Jelavic’s exit from the 54-time Scottish champions came just days before disaster struck. On February 14th 2012, the Gers entered administration, and the problems that ensued would eventually see them relegated to the fourth tier of the Scottish footballing pyramid.

The 36-time Croatia international has since become something of a nomad. He made 69 appearances for the Toffees before moving to Hull City and West Ham, whilst he also featured for two clubs in China. Now, he is at NK Lokomotiva Zagreb, although he is yet to make an appearance. However, it is at Ibrox where he is likely to be most fondly remembered.

In other news, Rangers fans are unhappy with this new signing’s latest comments.
