'Awful' - Pundit destroys 'shocking' Everton ace, tips Ancelotti to axe him
Noel Whelan has criticised Alex Iwobi ahead of Everton’s away game in the Premier League versus Newcastle United.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker was very critical of the Nigeria international after his rather poor display last time out against Southampton, and believes that that performance will mean that he will not get a start at St. James’ Park:
“Iwobi was shocking, he didn’t take his opportunity – whether he’s going to get another chance, I doubt it.
“He’s not been setting the world alight and he’s not been getting the fans excited since he came to Everton. They signed with a lot of hope and aspiration after seeing what he did at Arsenal but he’s not delivered. He’s not taken his chance.
“That was his moment to stamp his authority on his side and keep himself in. He’s done himself no favours. He was awful, he brought nothing to the side, so I can’t see him starting the next game.
“He’ll be on the bench but I don’t think he’s going to be a player forcing someone out of their position.”
Iwobi’s struggles vs Southampton
Indeed, Iwobi was very poor versus Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in the Toffees’ 2-0 loss, so much so that he was taken off at half-time.
The 24-year old failed to register a single shot on target, key pass or successful cross in the first half of the match (Sofascore).
Not taken his chance at Everton
Iwobi has simply not taken his chance to impress for the Merseyside club since his move from fellow top-flight rivals Arsenal in last summer’s transfer window.
The wide player has only managed to score a mere three goals and make just three assists in 36 matches over all competitions for the Toffees so far (Transfermarkt).
Will Iwobi be benched for Newcastle?
Indeed, it is a debate as to whether Iwobi will be benched for the game versus the Magpies on the weekend, despite the absence of Richarlison.
Having failed to impress against Southampton, Ancelotti may give other wingers such as Bernard or Anthony Gordon a chance to shine in the North East.
Nonetheless, Iwobi will have to prove himself on the pitch in future matches to show why the Blues bought him.
