'I would make no assumptions' – Lampard delivers verdict on future of Chelsea duo

Frank Lampard has been discussing the future of some of his players after a hefty summer transfer haul.

After confirming the signing of £22m goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes, Chelsea have now splurged more than £220m in this window alone.

However, despite an impressive recruitment plan, the Blues haven’t had a dream start to their 2020/21 season. After defeat to reigning champions Liverpool, they are already on the back foot. Further dropped points against West Bromwich Albion sets them further back in their mission to challenge for this term’s title and they are already five points off the summit after just three games.

The Baggies held Chelsea to a 3-3 draw after scoring three times in less than half an hour. Despite being able to claw back a result, their current form has left a lot to be desired.

With no major outgoings yet, the west Londoners are still looking to offload some players in order to balance the books in this window. If the club strike a deal for major target Declan Rice, it could take their spending past the £300m mark.

However, the likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Antonio Rudiger are amongst those who have been linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge. The duo, particularly Kepa, have cast concerns over their own future at the club after failing to impress Lampard.

However, in his recent press conference, Lampard has refused to discuss any sort of move away for either player.

“I wouldn’t assume anything and I wouldn’t assume [anything about] Antonio or any players in the squad,” he commented (via BT Sport).

“We are not there until next Monday when the window shuts, so other than that, I would make no assumptions.”

Lampard has gone on to back Kepa despite his recent disappointing displays.

“I think it has been a difficult time for Kepa, that has been well documented, I know it and he knows it, but we should certainly not jump to that conclusion.”

Publicly at least, the Spaniard has his manager’s backing, but whether he will still be a Chelsea player this time next week remains to be seen.
