Report: Brighton look to the future with double contract announcement
Brighton have announced that teenage goalkeeping duo Roco Rees and Fynn Talley have signed their first professional contracts with the club.
As reported by The Argus, the pair are set to take the next step up from the Seagulls’ under-18 side by being handed professional deals at the Amex Stadium.
With first team football probably still a way off, though, both players have indicated that they would like to go back out on loan, having both had loan spells away from the club in recent months (as per The Argus).
Rees, who was loaned out to Worthing during the 2019/20 season, joined Albion from Portsmouth at under-12 level.
The 18-year-old has played 28 times for Brighton’s under-18 side, conceding 47 goals (1.68 per game) and keeping just four clean sheets (14.3% of games). He played in the Seagulls’ three FA Youth Cup matches during the most recent season, including the thrilling 4-3 defeat to Arsenal which ended his team’s run in the competition in the fifth round. Talley is perhaps the more promising of the two, having previously been on Arsenal’s books before making the move to Sussex three years ago.
The 17-year-old played six times for Brighton in their Under-18 Premier League campaign, with nine goals conceded (1.5 per game) and one clean sheet (16.67% of games). He was between the sticks for the first four matches of that campaign, all of which the Seagulls won. [via TransferMarkt]
Given that the pair haven’t even played at under-23 level, never mind in Brighton’s first team, the Amex faithful will likely need to wait another while before seeing either of them getting their chance for the senior side.
However, with backup first team goalkeepers David Button and Jason Steele aged 31 and 29 respectively (and the latter turns 30 next month), the club are right to look to the long-term future by getting two of their promising youngsters to sign professional terms.
That course of action shows how highly Brighton rate the teenage duo and it should be exciting to see how their careers progress over the next couple of years.
