'Could be a good fit' - Pundit believes Arsenal should look to sign £50.04m title winner

Arsenal’s defence fell apart in their 2-1 loss to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur yesterday as Sead Kolasinac cheaply gave the ball away for Spurs’ first goal and Toby Alderviewald managed to score a header from a corner.

This has seen discussions reignite over the Gunners’ need for better defenders and after with many slating the performance of some of the backline, former Tottenham man Jamie Redknapp has been discussing the centre-back that he thinks would be a perfect transfer for the club.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “One of Virgil van Dijk’s biggest assets is his decision-making. He knows when to play and when to put the ball into row Z. With Stones, that’s been a downfall. He is quick, strong and brave in the air but he’s made high-profile mistakes. The spotlight has been on him since he was signed from Everton for £47.5million so his errors always catch attention.

“But Stones is still only 26 — the same age Van Dijk was when he joined Liverpool. He is young enough to mould, but has only started once in the league under Pep Guardiola since January.

“Arsenal need a centre back, and Mikel Arteta knows Stones from his City days. That could be a good fit.”

It’s hard to disagree here, and the fact that Mikel Arteta knows him really well could see him fit in at the Gunners perfectly. This could also see the player happy to move to Arsenal if he enjoyed being coached by Arteta.

Since joining the blue side of Manchester for £50.04m, Stones has played 131 games, and won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup once, the League Cup twice and the Community Shield three times, per Transfermarkt. He is also an England international, so the Gunners would be getting an experienced winner, who is still only 26 so has more years to get even better.

Kolasinac is not a natural centre-back and it is showing as he picked up a rating of 6.2, per SofaScore, in the North London derby. Arteta needs to bring in experienced Premier League players in that position and Stones ticks all the boxes. If Arteta can cut the mistakes out of his game, he could be an astute signing.
