SportsReport: Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has his say on reported EFL plans
Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has touched on speculation that a salary cap could be introduced to English football.
Parkinson’s side failed to gain promotion to the Championship after finishing eighth in the League One table due to the decision to end the season via a points-per-game system.
The Wearside club will now look to use the summer transfer window to build a squad capable of gaining promotion next term and avoiding a potential fourth successive stint in England’s third tier.
The EFL Annual General Meeting on Monday discussed the matter further, with claims emerging that a fixed £2.5m per season salary cap could be introduced as early next season.
Parkinson has responded to the reports which have echoed similar comments made by the club’s chief executive officer Jim Rodwell.
“There’s been talk about the salary cap which is quite a complex debate going on at the moment,” he said, speaking to safc.com [via Sunderland Echo].
“I’m not keen on it at all. I think clubs should be left to manage their own resources and we’re already regulated to a certain degree.”
Sunderland have no fewer than 11 players set to leave the club on a free transfer on June 30, which will hand Parkinson with a huge task this summer to replace those who have played regularly for the Black Cats this season.
Whilst a salary cap does sound like a good idea at first glance, it should perhaps be down to the club itself to decide how much they pay players.
After all, each club is a business. When run properly, it can be an enormous success; conversely, when mismanaged, it could fail miserably.
The one thing a salary cap may change is the gradual and more frequent downfall of clubs, following Bury’s demise last year.
