Paul Robinson has hailed Newcastle United’s retention of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as the club managed to persuade him to commit to a new long-term contract in the northeast, as per Football Insider.
The former Leeds, Tottenham and England goalkeeper was full of praise for the 31-year old, who has kept a relatively impressive nine clean sheets in 30 games in all competitions so far in the 2019/20 season, according to Transfermarkt.
Upon the return of the Premier League, Dubravka told NUFC TV that he is “100 per cent ready” for the visit of Chris Wilder’s high-flying Sheffield United team that is coming up this Sunday. That is in spite of the knee ligament damage he suffered in March after a collision with Southampton striker Danny Ings.
The Slovakia international signed a new six-year deal at St. James’ Park back in October of last year and was in good form for Steve Bruce’s side earlier in this campaign based off of his clean sheet record.
As a result, former goalkeeper Robinson was full of admiration for Dubravka when speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Tyneside club’s decision to offer him a new deal. When asked how much of a boost his return to the Magpies would be ahead of the remaining matches this term, Robinson said:
“That is huge for them.
“He is one of the best signings they have made in a long time and definitely their player of the season.
“They took him on loan originally but signed him permanently at the first opportunity and it has proved to be a great decision.
“There is your Alisson, Ederson and De Gea bracket but Dubravka is top of the bracket just below it.”
To talk about him in the same breath as Alisson, Ederson and David De Gea is credit to how well Dubravka has performed, and the Toon faithful may enjoy seeing more good displays from him at Newcastle in the future.
