'I find it almost astonishing' - Pundit shocked as Newcastle contract news emerges

Danny Mills is shocked that Newcastle United are set to offer Andy Carroll a new deal in the North East as he revealed to Football Insider his thoughts on the situation.

The outlet reportedly revealed last weekend that the striker has apparently reached a verbal agreement with the Tyneside club on a deal that will run until the end of the 2019/20 season and, in addition, he is allegedly in line for a new 12-month contract offer.

Added to that, the 31-year old is apparently willing to accept another pay-as-you-play contract to extend his second spell at the team that he has supported since he was a boy, as his current deal expires on the 30th of June, which is not so far away.

However, with the return of English football, Carroll should be able to play on further for the Magpies if and when needed before a decision ultimately needs to be made on his future in the long term.

Mills has admitted he is stunned at the news, but suggested that the Toon are keen to extend his agreement as it would be more costly to find a replacement in the upcoming summer transfer window.

“I find it almost astonishing,” the former Leeds United, Manchester City and English defender told the publication.

“Maybe he has got lucky because of the coronavirus situation.

“The club might know that they cannot get too many players in. It might be a case of sticking with what you have for now.

“He is a good professional but he has just been injured too much.

“But he is not going to cost them that much and it would cost more and be more hassle to get somebody else in.

“At this stage we do not know what is going to happen to the transfer market so they have favoured keeping him on for another year.”

Indeed, Carroll has featured in 14 games in all competitions so far in this campaign, making four assists but he has failed to find the back of the net, according to Transfermarkt.

With the would-be owners potentially coming in after the proposed takeover at St. James’ Park, Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabia-led consortium may not have plans to have the English international in their squad, so perhaps Mills is right to be stunned about the extension of his agreement at NUFC.
