Concern over 'superb' Leeds talent pre-Palace as Phil Hay drops 'treatment' tweet
Leeds United talent Crysencio Summerville felt the effects of a ‘heavy foul’ whilst in Under-23 action on Friday night, The Athletic’s Phil Hay says.
The lowdown
Leeds’ Under-23s took on Manchester City in a Premier League 2 Division One clash at Elland Road.
They took the lead after just six minutes through Mateo Joseph, but would go on to lose 3-1 after Kayky, Cole Palmer and Liam Delap scored for the runaway league leaders.
Summerville started the game, along with the likes of Kristoffer Klaesson, Lewis Bate and Charlie Cresswell, and lasted 65 minutes before he was substituted.
Because Leeds’ senior team don’t play Crystal Palace until Monday night, it’s possible that the players who featured on Friday could still be in contention for Jesse Marsch’s squad.
The latest
Leeds Live journalist Joe Donnohue tweeted during the first half that Summerville had been ‘absolutely clattered in a 50:50’ with Manchester City ‘keeper Cieran Slicker, who was subsequently booked.
And Hay reported just over 15 minutes later that Summerville was down ‘needing treatment again’ after a challenge from Romeo Lavi, who was also shown a yellow card.
The verdict
Summerville, who’s been labelled ‘superb‘ by former Leeds winger Noel Whelan and a ‘bag of tricks‘ by coach Chris Powell, has made the last eight Premier League matchday squads and featured nine times for the first team so far this season.
Against Watford last time out, he was handed an opportunity to impress from the bench, playing the final seven minutes.
So it’s worrying for Marsch and Leeds that he took some significant hits for the youth side. His participation against Palace could potentially be threatened, damaging the depth at the manager’s disposal.
