Report: Leeds linked with shock move for 'different class' 86-goal Barcelona ace

With the January transfer window just over a month away, Premier League sides are being linked with players already.  Fresh reports have claimed Leeds United are eyeing Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite.

The latest update on Braithwaite

According to Sport, the Barcelona number nine is one of several players that the club are willing to let go. This has alerted Leeds, and also two other Premier League sides in West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.

The Catalan giants would prefer if they could sell him, however they would allow him to leave on loan, and this is what the three English sides would prefer.

Would the forward be a good signing for Leeds?

When Braithwaite was playing at Middlesbrough, Jonathan Woodgate was full of praise for the forward. He said: “He’s been different class, his attitude has been fantastic, everything we’ve asked him to do he’s done professionally. He’s on the players, he raises the standard of training.

“You saw today that cross-field pass he hit to Jonny Howson – he’s been fantastic, he’s been really, really good.”

The fact that he receives such praise and also managed to attract the interest of Barcelona highlights that he definitely does have a lot of quality, despite his recent statistics suggesting otherwise.

The 29 year-old has 86 goals in 364 appearances, which isn’t the worst, but he only has one goal in his 16 games for the La Liga side (Transfermarkt). He also has played both in the Premier League and the Championship, for Middlesbrough, where he only scored nine times in forty appearances.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford is on great form as he has scored seven goals and picked up two assists in eight Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt). Therefore the club can’t be looking for a starting forward, but someone to strengthen the depth.

A loan would therefore not be a bad idea, however a permanent swoop would make little sense with Braithwaite’s poor form in Spain.

With the club also picking up Rodrigo in the summer, signing Braithwaite would seem like a shock move and wouldn’t make much sense.

In other Leeds news, one Arsenal legend has ripped into Bielsa in the build up to the two sides facing each other this weekend. Have a read who it was and what he had to say here!
