‘One of their best’ - Jose Mourinho without ‘sensational’ Spurs star as ‘real blow’ confirmed
Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper and pundit Paul Robinson has claimed the absence of Matt Doherty against Man City is a ‘real blow’ for manager Jose Mourinho – describing him as ‘one of their best players this season’ after his unavailability was confirmed.
Doherty, who has to start a 10-day period of isolation as he was exposed to Covid-19, will now miss Spurs’ encounter with the Sky Blues after touring with Ireland on international duty.
The summer signing, alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon, has been debatably one of Daniel Levy’s best 2020 coups so far – but Mourinho will be without the right-back for their first match back against City.
Doherty absence shoehorns Aurier
Serge Aurier, who has improved ever since Doherty put pen to paper on a move, arguably because of the extra competition, has been urged to replicate the 28-year-old defensively as Tottenham face a stern test.
City attacker Ferran Torres has been in electric form, netting a hat-trick for Spain on Tuesday night against Germany, and Pep Guardiola could deploy him on the left up against the Ivorian.
Robinson reacts
Robinson, speaking to Football Insider, has reacted to what a blow Doherty’s absence is for Spurs and stated how Aurier must be solid on Saturday.
“It is devastating news for Doherty because he has hit the ground running for Spurs,” he explained.
“He has been one of their best players this season.
“Spurs were looking to offload Serge Aurier in the summer but it looks like it has worked in their favour because they could be without Doherty for a a couple of games now.
“It is a real blow for them going into the game against Manchester City because Doherty and Hojbjerg have been their best players this year.
“A massive blow for Spurs but it gives Serge Aurier a chance to come back into the team.”
Transfer Tavern take
Described as ‘sensational‘ by another former Tottenham man, Doherty’s absence could in fact be a major blow to Spurs – especially with potent City attackers on their way to north London.
