Sports'Would not be good' - Former PL star urges key Gers figure to avoid making dream move
Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard not to follow Jurgen Klopp as Reds manager.
Gerrard should not replace Klopp
Gerrard made the move to Ibrox two years ago, and is currently enjoying plenty of success with the Gers. So far this season, his side is unbeaten after 16 games, having won 14, whilst they have conceded just four goals in all competitions.
The 40-year-old has been tipped in the past to replace Klopp at Anfield, where he previously played, but Enrique has urged him not to. He told The Daily Express:
“I do not know who’ll replace Klopp, but I hope it won’t be a decision the club has to make any time soon,
“Look at the difference he has had on the team, and the players who now want to come and play for us.
“Before he came and even when he joined, it was Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho – our best players at the time, who wanted to move to better teams and now we have Thiago coming from Bayern – who have just won the treble – to play for Liverpool because Klopp has made us one of the best clubs in the world.
“I believe Stevie (Gerrard) will manage the club one day, but to come in after Klopp immediately would not be good.
“Stevie is probably Liverpool’s best ever player and he’ll always be remembered as that, but to come in after Klopp fans will want him to win things straight away and that’s not easy.
“I really like how Stevie works as a manager and things are going really well for him at Rangers, but it would be difficult to change the way Liverpool work again after Klopp and achieve success immediately.
“I would love him to one day manage Liverpool, though.”
Gerrard should stay at Rangers
This is a huge season for the Gers north of the border – they are currently top of the Scottish Premiership, six points ahead of their fierce rivals Celtic, and they therefore have a real chance of winning their first top-flight league title since 2011. Not to mention stopping the Bhoys winning 10 in a row.
Therefore, any talk of Gerrard leaving the 54-time Scottish champions is just not welcome. Yes, he may well depart at some point, but it should not be any time in the near future – he still has so much to do in Scotland.
Klopp’s contract at Anfield runs until 2024, so any question of Gerrard stepping in to the breach when the former Borussia Dortmund boss departs does not yet need to be answered. If he were to take his dream job, though, Gerrard would hopefully be doing it after winning plenty of silverware in Glasgow.
