Wolves open negotiations to bring in £13.6m Brazilian trickster as Diogo Jota's replacement

Wolves are working hard to get their last set of deals across the line before the transfer window closes, which includes their pursuit of Gremio winger Pepe.

The 23-year-old trickster is believed to subject to interest from Nuno Espirito Santo as the Wolves boss seemingly wants to add the Brazilian to his group of new signings this summer, alongside the likes of Fabio Silva and Nelson Semedo.

After the departure of wide man Diogo Jota to Liverpool, the West Midlands outfit have been in the market, looking for a suitable replacement and they have identified Pepe as being a player who could fit the bill.

The Brazilian U23 international has put in some eye-catching performances in the Copa Libertadores so far which has resulted in Gremio blocking any possible moves for him, according to the Brazilian publication Globo Esporte.

They added that Wolves have made contact with the club and opened negotiations with the South American outfit but are yet to submit an official bid at this stage, despite rumours that a €15m (£13.6m) offer was put on the table.

Radio Grenal (via Sport Witness) added that FC Porto are also in the frame to capture Pepe, but Gremio’s club president Romildo Bolzan Junior insists that he will be staying in Brazil.

While there is fairly little known about Pepe at this point, it is interesting to see the rave reviews that he’s receiving from the Brazilian media.

Pepe has scored five goals and provided one assist in 12 appearances, which includes two goals from three Copa Libertadores outings, as per TransferMarkt, which might explain why he is the subject of so much interest.

It would be unwise for Wolves not to replace Jota before the window shuts, as he was such a key member of last season’s team that saw them finish 7th in the Premier League and reach the Europa League quarter-finals too.

Of course, it will be the judgement call of the manager and his backroom staff to make that decision but if Wolves want to finish further up the table, they must replace key personnel that have been allowed to leave the club.
