Sports'Perfect fit': Some Liverpool fans urge Reds to move for 'powerful' and 'experienced' free agent
A number of Liverpool fans have been urging Jurgen Klopp to dip into the free-agent market and sign Ezequiel Garay on a short-term deal, after the major blow of losing Virgil van Dijk to a knee injury.
Van Dijk is set to be side-lined for a few months at the absolute minimum, having sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton. Jordan Pickford’s ill-judged lunge on the Dutchman in the 2-2 draw has been met with widespread criticism and leaves the defender needing surgery, as per BBC Sport.
Liverpool decided not to add to their centre-back options in the summer, despite allowing Dejan Lovren and Ki-Jana However to leave the club. That now leaves Klopp’s side with only Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho to call upon at the heart of their defence.
It has been reported that the Reds could look to dip into the free-agent market for a potential short-term replacement for Van Dijk. One player who has been suggested as a potential target for them is former Valencia defender Garay, who recently left the La Liga side after four years, as per The Express.
The 34-year-old has been labelled as a ‘powerful’ defender who ‘never gets flustered.’ Those are the sorts of qualities that the Reds will be needing now in the absence of Van Dijk’s leadership. The Argentine has experienced playing under the weight of expectations of a big club having spent time with Real Madrid and Benfica.
A lot of Liverpool fans have been suggesting he could the right option for them to bring in during Van Dijk’s layoff, with many saying Klopp simply must strengthen their defence.
