Newcastle given injury boost following update on £40k-a-week ace deemed 'crucial' by Steve Bruce

Newcastle United have been given a potential boost with forward Dwight Gayle on track to return from injury in December, with the striker ahead of the potential worst case scenario timescale for his comeback.

Gayle has been out of action for the Magpies since the start of the campaign after the 30-year-old suffered a knee injury during a pre-season friendly against Crewe Alexandra back in August. That injury required surgery, with the forward being projected to be out for around three or four months, as per Sky Sports.

Steve Bruce’s gamble to include forward in Premier League squad

On Tuesday, Steve Bruce named his 25-man squad for the first half of the Premier League campaign, and despite Gayle’s current injury issues, he was one of the names included. That suggests the Newcastle manager is confident the striker will be able to play some part before the end of December.

It has now emerged that Gayle is progressing well with his rehabilitation after knee surgery, with the Magpies confident he will return ahead of the hectic festive schedule. Without any further setbacks, the 30-year-old is set to return ahead of the worst case scenario timescale, as per Football Insider.

After Gayle suffered the injury, Bruce stepped up his efforts to secure a move for Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson. The 28-year-old has become the Magpies’ main goal threat so far this term, scoring four of their seven goals. However, the Magpies are thin on the ground in terms of other players who can take on that scoring burden.

Gayle return could offer timely boost

If Gayle can return in December, he could be able to play a part as the Magpies face a testing spell of seven matches, including their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford. The 30-year-old would be a welcome option off the bench with his ability to stretch defences in behind. Bruce has described the forward as ‘invaluable’ and ‘crucial’, so he should come back into the fold as soon as he is ready.

However, the ex-Crystal Palace marksman will have a point to prove after falling down the pecking order somewhat with Wilson’s arrival. Gayle made 20 Premier League appearances last term, scoring four goals, but he also missed five big chances, as per Sofascore. That form would need to improve for the £40,000-a-week striker to challenge for a regular starting role in the side.
