‘Ludicrous’ - Charlie Nicholas has his say on key Neil Lennon issue

Last weekend Celtic lost in the Old Firm derby in the Scottish Premiership. They will want to forget quickly about the match and move on. However, Charlie Nicholas recently gave his views on the match and Neil Lennon.

Many of the Hoops fan base were not happy with Neil Lennon following the loss, with some believing it is time for him to go.

Nicholas did disagree with some of his team selection, but still believes that Lennon is the right man to lead the club to more glory.

Nicholas backs Lennon

Writing in his Daily Express column, via the Daily Record, he said: “It is ludicrous that some Hoops fans are saying Celtic should get rid of manager Neil Lennon in the wake of their defeat to Rangers.

“Lennon, however, has to take his share of the blame because he got his team selection wrong. Lennon also can’t blame the 2-0 defeat on the mole who leaked his line-up on the eve of the clash. When I was at Celtic the second time around, we had a mole.

“The manager, Billy McNeill, would ask guys like me, Paul McStay and Andy Walker who we had been talking to and how this information was getting out.”

“I have stuck up for Lennon before and I will continue to do so until I feel it is time for change. But things are not working and Lennon needs to put things right now because they have a big run of fixtures coming up.”

Is Lennon still the right man for Celtic?

It is normal to see many Hoops fans flock to Twitter to slate the manager following a defeat to their arch-rivals, and it could be argued that the fans are reacting too quickly following a bad result. However, there does seem to be some glaring reasons for their anger. The Old Firm loss has added more fuel to the fire as it has followed their humiliating Champions League qualifying defeat to Ferencvaros earlier this season.

That said, the manager has had a lot of success in Glasgow, and has the second best win percentage in the Bhoys’ history, just behind Martin O’Neil.

There is obviously a lot at stake for the Hoops this season as they look to win their tenth Scottish Premiership title in a row. This is now made slightly more difficult to do as they sit four points behind Rangers.

Lennon has only lost 47 of his 308 games in charge though, so this shows that when the Hoops do lose, they bounce back very well and so he should be able to turn things around quickly.

He might have got some things wrong at the weekend, but this can happen in football and the man who has won four SPFL titles and multiple domestic cups with the club should be trusted to help them win the league again.
