SportsMourinho helpless as Spurs star could be set for £27.5m departure
According to AS (via Sport Witness), Real Madrid are set to start looking for a new left-back due to Marcelo’s situation – which may mean Tottenham could lose Sergio Reguilon far sooner than expected.
Reguilon could solve Madrid’s Marcelo issue
Spurs signed Reguilon during the summer for £28m from the 13-time European champions. Manchester United had also been interested, but Real’s insistence on a buy-back clause put them off completing a deal. Daniel Levy, though, was clearly not too worried by the clause.
Marcelo is now 32 years old, is struggling for fitness, and was partly blamed for Madrid’s loss against Cadiz last weekend. As such, he could be out of the door, and with only Ferland Mendy in that position, Zinedine Zidane may well need another option. The former World Cup winner can activate Reguilon’s clause either next summer or in two years.
Dilemma for Mourinho
This is the danger with buy-back clauses – this one makes Jose Mourinho helpless. The clause stands at £27.5m, which would hardly break the bank at the Santiago Bernabeu. As such, if Reguilon performs to the level which Spurs hope he can reach, he will put himself in the shop window.
Levy’s deal in this case does not look good for Tottenham. It is already insinuated that Spurs are a feeder club for the La Liga giants – Gareth Bale and Luka Modric have both made the move to Spain from north London, for example. Mourinho, who is used to being top dog, is unlikely to be happy with being so easily manipulated. It remains to be seen whether Madrid do make their move for the 23-year-old.
