'It's getting better' - Leeds star drops teasing hint about return from injury

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has hinted that he could return to action sooner than first thought.

Elland Road boss Marcelo Bielsa has seen his side start the Premier League season in good form, despite a number of latest injury problems which have seen the likes of Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente both ruled out of action.

The Argentine boss has done well to cope without the defensive duo, whilst an injury to Phillips, which saw him suffer a damaged shoulder in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa, has also tested the squad’s depth.

Expected to face around six weeks on the sidelines, the England international’s defensive midfield position is one that Leeds rely on heavily and a latest update provided by the youngster will now have both Bielsa and the club’s fans buoyed.

What did Phillips say regarding his current injury status?

Speaking for the first time about the injury, the defensive midfielder shared a latest update on the Leeds That podcast this week.

“It’s getting better,” he said. “I’ve been injured for about a week now, so hopefully I’m aiming for three to four weeks, but if it’s not ready then I’ll have to aim for a bit longer.”

Those comments from Phillips come after Football Insider claimed that club doctors at Elland Road had penned a potential return against Arsenal on 21 November after the next international break.

How much of a loss is Phillips and who has replaced him?

Coming up against Aston Villa last time out in the Premier League offered Bielsa a tricky tie, especially considering that the Midlands side had won four games out of four prior to the fixture.

A 3-0 away win saw Leeds write further headlines and Phillips was not really missed if the truth be told, despite his obvious quality.

Pascal Struijk, a natural central defender, was the man trusted to replace the 24-year-old regular and although he only lasted 21 minutes, Jamie Shackleton was then hauled on to provide a solid 6.8 out of 10 performance.

Further performances like that from Shackleton will soften the blow of Phillips’ absence, but of course, fans will be excited to have the latter back as soon as possible.
