'He is worth more' - Experienced PL striker opens up on the future of former Leeds man

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray has backed former Leeds United defender Ben White to go on and become a regular for England.

23-year-old White played an important part in Leeds’ Championship title win and automatic promotion to the Premier League last season.

Having appeared in no less than 49 games in all competitions for the Yorkshire club, White was centre of interest from a number of clubs over the summer, including Liverpool.

Staying with Brighton, the youngster is now centre of further interest from Jurgen Klopp’s side after an injury to Virgil van Dijk in last weekend’s Merseyside derby ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Leeds were also linked with a summer move for White, who was on loan with them last term, but with Liverpool now returning with interest, it seems a return to Elland Road in the future is out of the question.

What has Glenn Murray said about White?

Currently on loan with Championship side Watford, Murray was drawn to comment on White’s future whilst appearing on the BBC’s Albion Unlimited podcast.

“There no reason why Ben, at his age, can’t go on and play for England,” Murray said.

“I think credit has got to be given to the club for saying no to the amounts of money that were bandied around in the summer from Leeds.

QUIZ: Can you name these 10 players signed by Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa?

“That takes a lot of faith to turn those offers down because they are lumpy offers for anyone, especially when they haven’t kicked a ball in the Premier League.

“But that shows the belief they have in the player and in what the club is doing in general.

“We are starting to see the conveyor belt coming through the academy now, and it is bearing fruit.

“If we had decided to sell Ben White in the summer that would have paid for the academy right there, but we chose not to because we believe he is worth more.”

Will White remain at Brighton past the January transfer window?

It will be extremely hard now for Brighton not to sell White, especially if Klopp and Liverpool make a solid move for him in January.

The Anfield outfit could need to find a solid replacement for Van Dijk and White has long been on the Merseyside club’s radar.

Currently valued by Transfermarkt at £13.5m, it will be interesting to see how much Brighton would hold out for if the Reds, Leeds, or any other club make a move for White.
