'Frustration and anger' - Rio Ferdinand reveals one MUFC decision that 'baffles' him

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has delivered a damning assessment of United’s transfer strategy this summer, with the Red Devils having missed out on top targets.

It has been reported that the Red Devils were unable to bring in any of Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s top transfer targets this summer. That meant that United were unable to make moves for the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Dayot Upamecano and Nathan Ake, as per ESPN.

Ferdinand bewildered by United transfer policy

United spent most of the summer chasing a deal for Sancho, and eventually saw a £91.3 million offer turned down by Borussia Dortmund. The German club had openly stuck to a firm stance of valuing the England international at £108 million and were not willing to let him leave after their August 10 deadline, as per Sky Sports.

The Red Devils had to instead settle for the additions of Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles to strengthen the first-team. United’s failure to secure a move for a centre-back has also been heightened by the early season struggles of Harry Maguire.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Ferdinand said it ‘baffles’ him United did not bring in a new defender. While he also expressed frustrations over the way in which the transfer saga surrounding Sancho unfolded.

He said: “It’s obvious Jadon Sancho was a target – so why didn’t you get him? I want to know why you didn’t get him. You want answers as a fan. To shut up the narrative that’s out there now, it’s better to hear answers. Just come out and go ‘this is the situation, we didn’t get him for these reasons’ – bang, move on.

“But it was dragged on through the window, then there’s frustration and anger that comes out of that because fans don’t know what’s going on and there doesn’t seem to have been a plan b in terms of what you’re going to do in case he doesn’t come.

“That’s how we see it but if we’re told ‘this is what’s happened’ it might control the temperature of the fans a little bit.”

United transfer failings already costing them

Manchester United have already suffered defensively so far this campaign, with the Red Devils having shipped 11 goals in their opening three league games. Maguire has really struggled, making an error leading to a goal against Tottenham and giving the ball away 11 times (via Sofascore). That shows just how badly a new centre-back was required but they took the risk not to get one.

As Ferdinand says there has been a lot of anger over their chase of Sancho, with Dortmund in the end making the Red Devils look somewhat incompetent. United will have to perform much better next summer and in January to earn some faith back from supporters.

United fans, do you think the Red Devils can perform better in the market in January? Let us know your thoughts below!
