'Ahead of schedule' - James Pearce provides injury update that will excite Liverpool fans

While the news of Virgil van Dijk’s injury will have reverberated across Liverpool yesterday, there was some good news that emerged relating to goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson and his long-awaited return

The 28-year-old was initially ruled out for up to six weeks at the beginning of the month after injuring his shoulder during training and he was absent for the Reds’ humiliating 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa and their 2-2 draw to Everton at the weekend.

Alisson is still expected to miss Liverpool’s first game of this season’s Champions League campaign away to Ajax on Wednesday, as Jurgen Klopp’s side look to start off with a win as they aim to clinch their seventh European crown.

While Van Dijk’s prolonged setback has overshadowed the weekend’s proceedings, a glimmer of positivity shone through the mist.

The Athletic’s James Pearce was elaborating on what the Reds will do from a defensive point of view going forward, adding that Alisson could return to the pitch sooner than expected.

“It’s an absolute hammer blow, no question about that”, he said while talking about Van Dijk.

“But at least some good news in that Thiago escaped serious injury and Alisson is ahead of schedule and on course to be back playing by the end of October.”

Every cloud

Segments of the Anfield faithful have been immensely critical about Klopp’s second-choice keeper Adrian after the performances he has put in during their last two Premier League games.

This news about Alisson will be uplifting as far as the Spaniard’s critics are concerned, as his return will inevitably bring stability to the backline. If he is back when Pearce predicts, then he will be fit enough to face FC Midtjylland and West Ham United, but perhaps most importantly, he will be available for Liverpool’s crunch clash against Manchester City in November.

However, with Van Dijk likely not to be playing in front of him for the rest of the season, questions loom as to how the Reds will get on this season.

Nevertheless, Alisson’s return will be a huge boost to Klopp and his teammates as they have conceded nine goals in their last two games without him. With a crucial run of games on the horizon, the Brazilian’s presence in between the sticks will be welcomed.
