2.7 tackles per game: Newcastle monitoring 'valuable' PL ace ahead of January transfer window
Newcastle United are set to continue to monitor the situation of Arsenal defender Rob Holding ahead of a potential fresh move for the defender in the January window.
The Magpies had been linked with a potential move to sign Holding on loan from Arsenal in the summer transfer window. However, despite Newcastle submitting a loan offer to the Gunners for the defender, Mikel Arteta confirmed to Sky Sports that the defender was set to remain at the club after their opening day win at Fulham.
Steve Bruce to continue defender hunt
It is thought that Newcastle could look to add another defender to their squad in the January window, after they missed out on strengthening in that area in the summer, as per Chronicle Live. The Magpies have had issues with injuries to the likes of Paul Dummett, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles at the start of the campaign.
Holding was thought to be one of the players that could make way at Arsenal in the summer, with the Gunners having brought in Gabriel Magalhães. However, it is now thought that they decided to keep hold of the 25-year-old after doubts emerged over William Saliba’s suitability for first-team football, per Chronicle Live.
Newcastle will continue to monitor Holding’s situation throughout the next few months though, despite the fact he has started three of Arsenal’s opening five Premier League games and it could be unlikely that he is allowed to leave in January, per Chronicle Live
Holding would be a major bonus for Bruce
Holding is a very comfortable defender and has qualities which would improve the Magpies’ backline. Newcastle have been conceding a lot of attempts on their goal so far this term, with Karl Darlow having made the most saves in the league so far. Therefore, having a player who has averaged four clearances and 2.7 tackles per game this season (via Sofascore) would be a huge lift.
The 25-year-old is back in Arsenal’s first-team plans and only an injury kept him out of their defeat at Manchester City at the weekend. Arteta has previously labelled him as a ‘great’ and ‘valuable player,’ potentially moving him too high up the pecking order at the Emirates for Newcastle to get their man.
That said, if Holding were to arrive on Tyneside, one would have to fancy a partnership with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez to be a fruitful one.
