One man impresses despite defeat for Sunderland under-23s [Opinion]

Jack Diamond netted for Sunderland’s under-23 side in a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United on Monday afternoon.

First team manager Phil Parkinson has heavily bolstered his squad this summer during the transfer market, which saw Diamond return to the club after helping Harrogate Town to gain promotion to the English Football League for the first time in their history.

Competition for places in Parkinson’s starting XI is now healthy and the likes of Diamond are currently featuring for the second team in a bid to stay fit and find good form ahead of a potential call-up.

Diamond impressed during pre-season and his goal for Sunderland’s under-23 side on Monday evening may further tempt Parkinson to hand the 20-year-old a chance at competitive first team level.

Sunderland have started the 2020/21 season in good form, drawing the opening League One game before beating both Oxford United and Peterborough United.

Diamond’s late penalty on Monday evening was not enough to salvage a point as the under-23s lost out 3-1 to their Leeds United counterparts in the Premier League 2. Defender Arbenit Xhemajli was also included by under-23 boss Elliot Dickman from the start. [via safc.com]

If Diamond can keep up the good work at under-23 level, chances could then come for him in the first team, especially after his Harrogate heroics last term and impressive form recently.

It will be interesting to see if Diamond goes on to become a key player and regular for the Black Cats.
