'Ludicrous', 'Ridiculous' - Pundit slams one aspect of Newcastle draw v Spurs

Former Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has slammed the handball law as he told Football Insider just how outraged he was at the decision to hand the Tyneside club a penalty after the ball hit the hand of Eric Dier in the box.

Indeed, Callum Wilson slotted away the resulting penalty kick in added time to earn Steve Bruce’s team a point in their 1-1 draw away at Spurs in the Premier League on the weekend.

It cost Jose Mourinho’s side two points and even though the Magpies earned themselves a point out of it, some members of the Toon Army may have counted themselves fortunate given the controversy surrounding the law.

Robinson is certainly not a fan of the law, which is an adjustment to the handball rule that has come into operation in the 2020/21 term.

The rule states that contact “below the bottom of the armpit” can be deemed as an offence, particularly by the defending side in their own box.

Robinson described the law as “ludicrous” and further told the outlet:

“Anyone that has played the game or anyone with any knowledge of the game knows what a ridiculous ruling that was. It just was not a handball in any sense of the word.

“Steve Bruce benefited from the decision and even he said what a ridiculous decision.

“This rule is going to kill the game. Players will be in the box trying to kick it off their opponents arm.

“I actually feel for the referees though because they are only doing what they have been told. It has come from the top. Their hands are tied.

“It is one of the most ridiculous rule changes the game has seen.”

Indeed, one may question as to whether NUFC deserved to get anything out of the match, having been inferior to the Lilywhites in terms of possession of the ball, shots on goal, corners taken, big chances created, accurate passes and dribbles made in the game, according to Sofascore.

However, they nicked a point because of the adjustment to the handball rule, and so one can perhaps understand as to why Robinson is so enraged by it.
