'Unbelievable' - Pundit defends 'incredible' Daniel Levy after Spurs beat Arsenal
Former Spurs striker Robbie Keane has defended Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy from harsh criticism and insists he is “more ambitious now” than ever before.
Recent reports claimed a section of Spurs fans had commissioned a plane to fly a ‘Levy Out’ banner over the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the north London derby with Arsenal to air their grievances over the lack of progress on the pitch.
After reaching the Champions League final last year, Tottenham came into the clash in ninth place in the Premier League, a point behind their arch rivals.
However, no plane was in sight as Spurs fought back to beat the Gunners 2-1 at home to climb above them in the table, as Toby Alderweireld scored the decider in the closing stages of the game.
Speaking after the game, Keane believes Levy will back Jose Mourinho in the summer.
“Let’s be real here guys, Daniel Levy has done unbelievable things for Tottenham- the stadium and the training ground – and he deserves a lot, a lot of credit for that,” he told beIN SPORTS (via The Evening Standard).
“There were a lot of people saying there was going to be a banner flying today, which is crazy, because what he has done for that club is incredible and he’ll support Mourinho again next year – he will give him funds to build this team. He is more ambitious – and I know Daniel very, very well personally – he is more ambitious now than he ever was because he wants success for Tottenham Hotspur.”
It is hard to argue with Keane here, as the chairman deserves far more credit for Tottenham’s recent success.
Although Levy has copped a fair amount of criticism over the years, it is worth remembering he broke the club’s transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele last summer.
He appointed Mauricio Pochettino in 2014, which turned the club into top-four regulars, and earned them their first Champions League final in the process.
When Pochettino didn’t work out as planned after a slump in form, the Spurs chief appointed Mourinho in his place.
Unlike his predecessor, the Portuguese is a proven winner, as his resume more than speaks for itself. Mourinho has made it clear he wants to win trophies at Tottenham, and with the board’s backing, there is no reason to believe that won’t be the case.
Levy, who is the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League, has an estimated net worth of £1bn according to Forbes, as relayed by The Daily Express.
The clever businessman made a smart move to take out a £175m loan from the Bank of England to protect the future of the club.
Spurs have come on leaps and bounds under his stewardship and the evidence is there for all to see.
As the transfer window approaches, the Lilywhites have been linked to some of the best players in the world, and fans will have to wait and see what deals can be made before the market closes.
