'Time is probably up at the club' - Kevin Phillips tips Sunderland exit for £1.08m-valued man

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has given his thoughts on the future of Will Grigg, saying he thinks the striker will quit the club this summer.

Arriving at the Stadium of Light back in the January transfer window of 2019, the former Wigan Athletic front man has had pressure firmly on his shoulders after his move was heavily documented via Netflix series Sunderland Til I Die.

With the 2019/2020 season now ended, seeing Sunderland fail to gain promotion from League One to the Championship for a second successive season, Grigg managed to net just one goal and gain one assist for Phil Parkinson’s side.

Reports have emerged since the end of the season, claiming that Sunderland were willing to listen to offers for Grigg, who is valued at just over £1m by Transfermarkt (£1.08m).

And, Phillips has now discussed the striker’s future, sharing his thoughts as a regular pundit via Football Insider.

“Grigg’s time is probably up at the club,” Phillips said.

“I didn’t live in Blackpool when I played for them, I lived in Birmingham and it did not affect me. Sometimes you can use that as an excuse.

“I thought Will Grigg was going to be a great signing for Sunderland but it just hasn’t worked out. I do not see it as the living arrangements because he would not have been travelling up everyday because that is physically impossible.

“He is a grown man and he has been around a long time so I do not see that as being a major issue. Sometimes players find it very hard to settle at the club and that has been the issue for Will since he has been at Sunderland.”

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson could be set for a summer of wholesale changes as he looks to build a side capable of gaining promotion from League One to the Championship.

It remains unknown where Grigg’s future lies past this summer but one thing is for certain, his time with the Black Cats has failed to impress.

Just one goal last season is simply not good enough for a team looking to move back up to the Championship and Parkinson will have to make the right decision this summer.
