'That ship has sailed' – Former Chelsea man delivers verdict on £20.2m-valued star
Chelsea and Willian are at a stalemate regarding his future with the West London club and it could spell a summer exit.
Despite the Brazilian’s impressive performances since football restarted, the Blues are no closer to tying him down past the end of this season. As it stands, Willian is set to depart from Stamford Bridge upon the expiry of his current contract.
According to earlier reports, Chelsea were willing to offer the 31-year-old an extra two years in blue, but Willian was hoping for a three-year deal. Goal.com claims the winger wishes to stay where he is, but would like a move to another ‘big London club’ if Chelsea can’t offer him what he wants.
This brings in the opinion of Chris Sutton, who feels ‘that ship has sailed’ on an agreement being made between Willian and the club.
“I think he’s a really valuable player but the fact [Hakim] Ziyech is coming in and [Timo] Werner and they have players who can play in those wide areas, I think Frank [Lampard] is looking for something a little bit different,” the former Chelsea man told Stadium Astro (via the Express).
There’s no doubt Willian still has a lot left to give. The £20.2million-valued man has been involved in seven of Chelsea’s goals since the restart, including his match-winning penalty against Manchester City. His strong run of form takes his tally for this season up to 11 goals and nine assists for the season (via Transfermarkt).
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at somewhere like Spurs if I’m totally honest,” Sutton continued. “I think he’s still got a good few years in him left.”
