SportsBrighton plot £5m raid for London-based 22 y/o; could spell the end for 2-goal winger [Opinion]
Brighton are are among several clubs hoping to scupper a proposed move to Belgium for QPR winger Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Football Insider reported that the London club have accepted a £5m offer from Club Brugge for the 22-year-old, although the Seagulls, along with Leicester and Fulham, are now hoping to make an 11th-hour swoop for him and keep him in England. All three clubs are reportedly willing to match the Belgian champions’ offer for the Nigerian.
Osayi-Samuel has scored six goals and provided nine assists in 39 games for QPR so far this season, most recently setting up Dominic Ball’s equaliser against Luton last week. Predominantly a right winger, he can shift to the left flank, or play in a number 10 or centre-forward role, if the occasion requires. [via TransferMarkt]
The 22-year-old is adept at taking on opponents, averaging 2.9 successful dribbles and drawing 1.9 fouls per game, while his attack-minded nature is reflected in match averages of 1.2 shots and 1.2 key passes. [via WhoScored]
Interestingly, Brighton only have one natural right winger in their current squad – and that is the rarely-seen Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
The Iranian has struggled for game-time this season, making just 11 appearances in all competitions and starting only three Premier League games. His sole appearance since last month’s restart was 20 minutes off the bench against Manchester City, although the 26-year-old hasn’t been helped by a recent hamstring problem.
His two goals in successive games over the festive period remain the only two that he has struck in 2019/20 – and indeed they are his only goals for the club since his £17.1m move (as per TransferMarkt) a couple of years ago.
Graham Potter has often preferred to play the likes of Aaron Mooy and Pascal Gross – conventionally central midfielders – on the right rather than trust in Jahanbakhsh.
Should a natural right winger in Osayi-Samuel, who has had a productive season for QPR, arrive at the Amex Stadium, it would become even harder to envisage the Iran international getting much game-time, and he could subsequently decide to seek a fresh start elsewhere in that case.
