3 changes from Potter, Webster to win fitness race: Brighton predicted XI v Newcastle [Opinion]

Brighton go into this evening’s Premier League clash against Newcastle knowing that one point from their final two games will mathematically secure their top-flight status again for next season.

In reality, the Seagulls did enough to end any lingering fears of the drop by claiming a point away to Southampton last Thursday, while Bournemouth’s defeat to the Saints yesterday leaves them six points adrift of Graham Potter’s men and having only one more game to try and overturn an 11-goal disadvantage.

As per Brighton & Hove Independent, the Seagulls manager is optimistic that Adam Webster, who suffered a hip problem at St Mary’s four days ago, will be passed fit to feature against the Magpies. Alireza Jahanbakhsh may also be available after returning to training following a hamstring injury, also Steven Alzate and Jose Izquierdo remain sidelined.

Our predicted Brighton XI for the Amex Stadium clash features three changes in personnel from the team that started against Southampton:

Fresh from his outstanding reaction save on Thursday, Mat Ryan needs just two more full appearances to complete an entire Premier League season for Brighton. Potter went with three at the back at St Mary’s, flooding the midfield in an apparent attempt to combat Southampton’s aggressive pressing game, but could revert to a conventional back four here, with Dan Burn and Tariq Lamptey on the flanks. Webster will likely play alongside Lewis Dunk if fit enough to feature, although Shane Duffy could be called upon if there are fitness doubts over the ex-Bristol City man.

Yves Bissouma may return to the centre of midfield, having only come on as a substitute against the Saints, with Davy Propper and Dale Stephens also holding the fort in the middle of the park. There could be a couple of changes in terms of the Seagulls’ wide options, with Leandro Trossard coming in for Solly March on the left and Lamptey’s return to a right-back role presenting Aaron Mooy with the chance to take up the right midfield berth.

Potter started with two up top on Thursday as Glenn Murray partnered Neal Maupay, although the 36-year-old might not start two games in such quick succession, leaving their top scorer in a lone centre-forward role as he hopes to add to his 10 goals this season.
