It looks like Mikel Arteta might have more transfer funds available than initially expected, and he is reportedly tempted to use some of his budget on Espanyol midfielder Marc Roca.
According to Football.London, Arteta could be tempted to go back in for the youngster this summer.
Their report stated that recent events has hit the north Londoners hard, as fans are not allowed in stadia at this current time and this has had big financial implications on Arsenal, who have the second highest average matchday revenue of any club in the Premier League.
However, as per Football.London, owner Stan Kroenke has put his hand into his pocket and given the club a loan to buy out the bonds taken out on the Emirates Stadium when it was built in the mid-200s.
Despite Espanyol’s relegation from La Liga, Roca has impressed for the Barcelona-based club, averaging 2.2 tackles, one interception and 1.4 clearances a game, per WhoScored. His performances have not gone unnoticed at international level, either, as he was part of Spain’s European Under-21 Championship-winning squad last summer.
Arsenal are in the market for a defensive midfielder who can break up opposition attacks, which is highlighted by their heavy interest in Thomas Partey, and Roca falls in to this category.
It’s interesting when you compare the two, because Roca has averaged more tackles and clearances a game whilst Partey has more interceptions, although he is three years older than the Espanyol midfielder. The 23 year-old Spaniard has also drawn comparisons with Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets, per Football.London, and he could actually be a great alternative option if the Gunners’ pursuit of the Atletico Madrid man is unsuccessful.
Given such endorsements and his impressive figures in La Liga this term, Roca could be well worth considering as an alternative to Partey.
