Sports169% profit: Norwich got two good years out of winger who struck a mean free kick [Opinion]

Robert Snodgrass wasn’t in the West Ham squad that faced his former club Norwich at Carrow Road yesterday as he is currently sidelined with a back injury, although it is a fixture which brings back happy memories for the 32-year-old Scotland winger.
Snodgrass was signed by the Canaries from Leeds in July 2012 for a fee of £2.88m (as per TransferMarkt). He proved to be something of an all-action player in his first season in East Anglia, ending the campaign with seven goals and nine assists while also collecting eight yellow cards. He also caught the eye for his free kick prowess, scoring directly from such a set piece three times in a five-match spell midway through the 2012/13 season.
His performances at Carrow Road saw him shortlisted for the club’s Player of the Season award, which ultimately went to Sebastien Bassong (as per Evening News 24), although it was a sign that the Scottish winger had made a clear impression in Norfolk.
Snodgrass had to be patient for his first goal of the following season but, when it came, it was worth the wait. On 9 November 2013, with Norwich and West Ham drawing 1-1 in the 72nd minute, the Scotland international stepped up and curled an exquisite free kick into the net, with the Canaries ultimately winning 3-1 (as per canaries.co.uk).
That was the first of six Premier League goals in 2013/14 for the Scot, who scored seven in all competitions and was also booked six times, but he was unable to prevent Norwich from losing their top-flight status. The Canaries left the top tier but Snodgrass didn’t, signing for Hull City in a £6.75m deal (as per TransferMarkt) in July 2014. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury ruled him out for almost the entirety of the subsequent season.
Norwich ultimately made a 169% profit on the 32-year-old, whose current club are striving to avoid the fate to which his former side are doomed – namely relegation to the Championship. What Daniel Farke wouldn’t have given to have had a potent winger like him in his squad this season, with the Canaries bottom of the Premier League in terms of goals scored as well as position.
