£1.13m: Celtic got a bargain when they signed 115-goal ace lauded by Frank McGarvey
This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.
Back in 2014, Leigh Griffiths arrived at Celtic for £1.13 million from English side Wolves. The forward had a decent short career at Molineux, scoring 13 times in 31 appearances and clearly Celtic liked what they saw, per Transfermarkt. He was known to Scottish supporters as he had previously played for Hibernian, Livingston and Dundee, where he managed 97 goals in 192 appearances.
When he arrived, he was seen as a risky move as manager Neil Lennon warned him to clean up his act. Before signing, he was acquitted of shoplifting and the striker made gestures to his own supporters, per The Daily Mail.
When you are at such a big club like Celtic, you can’t be acting like this and it looked like he understood this as he has become a great striker for the club since. The Scottish international has featured 234 times for the Hoops, per Transfermarkt, in all competitions including the Champions League. He scored a very impressive 115 goals whilst also picking up 49 assists and these contributions have definitely been crucial to the club as it has helped them win seven league titles in a row, four Scottish League cups and two Scottish cups.
Plenty of pundits have raved about his performances in green and white, including ex-Celtic striker Frank McGarvey who suggested he was as good as Moussa Dembele back in 2018 (Daily Record).
He is also only 29, and is continuing to score at Celtic. He netted 11 times last term so it seems that he may have some years left at Parkhead yet. He is now worth slightly more than what they paid for him (£1.44m) and during his peak he was valued at £2.7m.
Despite the fact they have not sold him on for profit, he is continuing to show his value on the pitch and you have to say for what he has given the club down the years, signing him has proven to be an absolute bargain.
