SportsReport: Newcastle fans may be boosted by what local MP has done as news emerges
Newcastle United fans may be boosted by the news that local MP Chi Onwurah has written a letter to the Under Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) with regards to the season ticket situation in the northeast.
In the letter, Onwurah urges Minsiter Paul Scully to help get the fans their season tickets refunded, as the Tyneside club remain the only Premier League team yet to announce their policy on refunding their supporters with regards to tickets that they have purchased for games that they will no longer be able to attend. All matches in the English top flight will be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future following the coronavirus pandemic.
St. James’ Park lies in her constituency and so she seems very passionate in her letter to try and get this sorted as to appease the fan base. The local MP also takes a dig at the current Magpies board, which consists of managing director Lee Charnley and current owner Mike Ashley, who still remains in the hot-seat despite the ongoing negotiations with Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabia-led consortium over the proposed takeover of the Toon.
Onwurah also claimed that the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust (NUST) wrote to her to urge her to take action, as direct debits are being taken out of the bank accounts of Newcastle supporters, in some cases for the 2020/21 season despite there being uncertainty as to who will own the club.
Nevertheless, it is a relatively powerful statement to make and the fans themselves will hope that action will be taken as a result of this, but at least they may be given a boost as their voices will have been heard.
