Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett discusses reasons behind former Spurs youngster's release

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett has revealed the reasons behind his decision to allow goalkeeper Luke McGee to leave the club.

With the League One season coming to an end via a points-per-game system, Pompey missed out on automatic promotion to England’s second flight but they will instead attempt to go up via the play-off route, meeting Oxford at the start of July over two legs.

Following the outcome of that tie with Oxford and the potential of following Coventry and Rotherham into the Championship, Jackett will look to further improve his squad over the summer.

However, one player that will no longer be at Fratton Park is McGee, who will be allowed to leave when his deal expires on June 30.

Jackett signed McGee from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed transfer fee in July 2017, with the ‘keeper making 50 appearances during his debut campaign, but the arrival of Craig MacGillivray and rise of Alex Bass has seen him drop out of the starting XI.

Jackett told The News of McGee’s looming departure: “Luke is out of contract and we are not renewing it.

“He was on loan at Bradford, that was his last club, and, with them not involved in the League Two play-offs, they have stopped that. I am sure he’ll now be looking forward to the future and what the next challenge is.

“I thought he had a very, very good season the first year he was here. However, Craig coming in and then Alex developing through our youth policy, has just edged him out. That’s a strong department for us at the moment.

“He’s a good goalkeeper and young as well for a keeper, there won’t be any problems for him in terms of his career and picking up a club. I’m sure he will do a good job elsewhere. He is still young, but has quite a number of league games under his belt.

“He will find his next challenge when things settle down and I’m certain will go on and do well.”

The 24-year-old must have some quality, having developed at Tottenham, and was a core part of the Portsmouth team in his early days at Fratton Park, but he will now look to find football elsewhere and that could seem him drop further down the Football League.

Jackett’s potential success this season with Pompey could see them gain promotion to the Championship and the experienced boss will know exactly what sort of squad he will need to remain in that division should they go up.
