Arsenal should allow 28 y/o to leave sooner rather than later- Opinion

The latest transfer news around Arsenal suggests that current loanee Cedric Soares still hasn’t been offered an extension on his loan deal and could be on his way back to Southampton by the end of the week.

According to the Daily Echo, Cedric is facing ‘a week of uncertainty’ as Arsenal are yet to offer him a contract extension. It seems to be a weird situation as many clubs look to extend loan deals as the football season is finishing at a later date due to the coronavirus pandemic halting the season, but the north London side are still undecided on Cedric.

The Gunners had to pay a £3.5m loan fee to secure his services which including his wages, took the total financial package to around £5m, per Daily Echo.

Many thought the signing was not a good deal when it first happened because Cedric was injured at the time he moved on loan to the Emirates Stadium, and it was obvious Arsenal saw him as maybe just a cover option. However, he was not able to make a single appearance before football was postponed in March, per Transfermarkt, and could leave the club without ever actually playing for them.

The Gunners now have Hector Bellerin back and can use Ashley Maitland-Niles as cover, so they should just cut their losses and allow the 28 year-old to leave so that they don’t have to waste any more money on his wages. He was a starter at the Saints but the fact that they allowed him to leave on loan highlights that they did not feel he was a crucial player, and Arsenal should take this as a sign that he is not good enough for the north London side.

Gunners fans, should Cedric be given a contract extension to the end of the season? Comment below with your views!
