£720k-valued ace with four clean sheets in five would be ideal signing for Sunderland - Opinion

Sunderland are expected to make a summer move for Bristol City’s Bailey Wright, according to a report by Chronicle Live.

The central defender joined the Black Cats on loan during the January transfer window and went on to make five league appearances for Phil Parkinson’s side before the suspension of football.

The Australian born defender moved to England in 2009, joining Preston North End, where he spent a number of years helping the Lilywhites win promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in 2015.

Signed by Bristol City in January 2017, Wright played a minimal amount of games earlier this season, before moving to Sunderland on a temporary basis.

With Sunderland set to see a total of 11 players leave the club at the end of this month due to expiring contracts, it has now been reported that Wright could arrive on a permanent deal.

Seeing his current contract expire with Bristol City, the £720,000-valued Australia international would seemingly be open to a move to the Wearside club, having established himself in the starting eleven before the 2019/2020 season came to an abrupt end. Indeed he started five games for the club, keeping four clean sheets in that time before an injury hit in February (BBC Sport).

Black Cats boss Parkinson and Chief Executive Officer Jim Rodwell are due to sit down with a number of players whose contracts are coming to an end in the coming days.

Whilst the future of 11 players at the Stadium of Light is unknown and up for debate, you have to feel that Wright would be a good signing.

After missing out on promotion to the Championship for a second season in a row, Sunderland are set for a big change in personnel this summer and with Wright having only had a brief spell at the club, he could feel like a new signing. Added to that, he certainly made a positive impact in his short spell in the side this term, with the team conceding just twice in the five games he played.

Added to that, he will be a free agent which is an added bonus for the Black Cats who are in a bit of a financial mess at the moment (Sunderland Echo). All in all, Wright could be the ideal signing for Sunderland.
